God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit...

God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24 ESV)

I think one of the keywords in this verse is “spirit.”

So often we associate the word “worship” with song. And mostly that only happens about once a week at church. We’ve even reached the point that we started calling that hour “worship.” Like when people say “join us for worship at 11:00 on Sunday morning.” We’ll…they’re not totally wrong considering that we are worshiping the one and only God during that time on Sunday, and there’s obviously absolutely nothing wrong with that…but we can’t forget what worship was meant to be.
You don’t hear the term “praise and worship” as much these days as you used to. Mainly because the term has just kind of dwindled off like many other phrases. That term was always referring to a style of music; music that was praising and worshiping God. I like to take the term and break it up though.
I’ve always seen praise as being what we do every Sunday at church. We sing praise to God and lift our voices to him.
-Praise is the act of making positive statements about a person, object or idea, either in public or privately.
Now think about what we do at church during that hour of praise and worship. We lift high the name of God and praise him for everything he’s done. I’m pretty sure the term “praise” couldn’t fit better anywhere else.
On the other hand…the term “worship” can definitely be used elsewhere.

Let’s get two things straight.

1. Worship is NOT a genre of music.

2. Worship is definitely not an hour of gathering on the weekend.

Just take a second to think about what your doing now (besides reading), what you did earlier today, or what you were doing yesterday.
Most of those things create what we call a “lifestyle.” Well, worship is also a lifestyle, and it can be yours. No, this doesn’t take redoing your whole life schedule. This just means doing everything you do for the glory of God. Simply eating breakfast with a thankful attitude that God has blessed you with a good meal can be a form worship. The way you treat your job and the way you treat your home can be a form of worship.
See, we don’t need to be singing all the time to worship. We don’t need to be in a group. We don’t need to have a set place and time. We just need a thankful heart and a lifestyle that reflects who God is.

I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! (1 Corinthians 15:31 ESV)

Forgetting about ourselves and living for God instead.
…That is what worship truly is…
